Every business has one number that moves before everything else does. Here's how to find yours.

A simple weekly habit for turning the data you already have into decisions you can act on — no analyst, no dashboards, no spreadsheet skills required.

There's a number sitting in your business right now that you haven't looked at in three weeks.

Not because you don't care. Because opening a dashboard has never once felt as productive as answering an email.

So the numbers pile up. Visits, open rates, sales by week, customers by source. All of it technically available. None of it actually used.

The problem was never discipline. Reading rows of data and pulling a real conclusion out of them is hard work, and the payoff never arrives fast enough to justify the hour it costs.

AI changes the math on that. It reads. You decide.

Here's the practice, start to finish.

Open a chat window and paste in last week's numbers — copied straight from your dashboard, messy formatting and all. It doesn't need cleaning. Add one line of context about what your business actually does, because a number means nothing without it.

Then ask what changed compared to the week before, and what might explain it. That single question does most of the work.

Next, ask it to flag anything unusual — an outlier, a drop, a spike you'd have scrolled past. This is the part you're worst at and it's best at.

Then ask for one recommendation. Not a summary of what happened. A suggestion for what to do about it.

Finally, push back once. Ask what evidence would prove that recommendation wrong. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the one that keeps you from acting on a confident-sounding guess.

Three questions and a challenge. Four minutes.

Now the part most people miss.

Every business has one number that moves before everything else does. Find it and the rest of the dashboard becomes optional.

For an email list, it's reply rate — not open rate. Open rate tells you the subject line worked. Reply rate tells you the writing mattered.

For a service business, it's repeat clients. When that climbs, revenue follows on a delay. When it slips, nothing else you fix will hold.

For a shop, it's return purchase rate. For a freelancer, inbound referrals. For a course creator, completion rate — because people who finish are the people who tell others.

If you're not sure which is yours, use this test. Imagine one number doubled overnight and everything else stayed flat. Whichever one would genuinely change your year is the one to watch.

Two things worth knowing before you start.
Don't ask about six metrics at once. You'll get six shallow observations instead of one useful one.
And check the arithmetic yourself before you act on anything expensive. AI reads patterns well and adds columns carelessly.

You don't need to become a data person. You need one number and one habit.

Friday afternoon. Paste. Ask. Push back. Decide.
